It is natural to have several different altars around your home, both inside and outside. Perhaps you have one dedicated to the seasons and the wheel of the year, as well as another one to honor deceased ancestors, and a third to showcase symbols of the things you are drawing into your life. However, most everyone has one “working” altar where they perform most of their spellwork and, for the solitary pagan, their rituals as well.
Your altar is something very personal to you, so you want to make it reflect your own personality and values.
Here is a diagram of a basic altar setup:

Believe it or not, there is some rhyme and reason to the placement of items on the altar.
- The top half (the edge farthest from you) represents the universe and the divine.
- The bottom half (closest to you) represents the earth and more personal matters.
- The left side of the altar is for the Goddess. It is feminine, representing water, earth, and the moon and stars.
- The right side is for the God and is masculine. It represents physical energy, the Sun, air, and fire.
- The middle of the altar represents Spirit, and a bridge between the mundane and divine.
